Hey guys, here is a short "one riff" comparison between Axe FX 2 XL with latest firmware and Amplifire 3. The amp is Friedman BE and the IR is Ownhammer Friedman 4x12 V30B OH1-5. My friend send me a reamp of my DI signal with Friedman 2018 amp model in AxeFX with everything on noon, or something really close. I tried to match it with Amplifire and i think AF did a great job. I did slight boost in the treble, pre amp low cut on 250, master on 4 and gain on 7. The only real difference was that AF model had less gain, and the high cut was on 7khz (Axe was on 7.5khz). Other than that, pretty much the same eq and settings. I could match it even more but i didnt have time so... Its not the same riff note for note, but the same guitar, same tuning, same strings just a day apart lol
Would love to hear your opinions... Cheers!

    They both sound really good.
I'm sure each one could be EQ'd to sound more similar to the other.
    Solid riffing too!

Axe FX has more harmonic content or saturation which you can't add with eq. Sounds way more three dimensional.

I didnt get that at all when i tested the sound from both units... Truth be told i didnt get into deeper tweaking or tweaking at all (i will soon) with Axe, but i think that these two sounds are practically identical (or with a bit of tweaking).

Amplifire has that raw, real feeling which i think Helix and some other modeler lacks...

What I hear is that Axe has wider spectrum of frequencies and Amplifire lacks some of it, and is too pronounced at low mids and it has annoying upper mids spike somewhere between 3.5-5khZ. Sounds kind of "stiff" and it's not breathing as well as Axe FX. But maybe it's just my taste or equipment combined with different ears and room etc. I have never owned a Fractal Audio product, but always wanted to. I tried Helix Native when it came but always knew that I couldn't get into it because of that lack of certain feel.

I agree with NickK, they are close but it appears the Amplifire is a little bit more raw and sounds less processed (subtly) when listening on really good headphones. I do not hear more harmonics coming from Axe, they both sound pretty equal in that respect, to my ears. Both sound great tho... and this is the thing about the AA that I Iove, less than a 3rd of the cost but really close to being the real deal, the real tube amp... IMO

Thats what was my conclusion... The AF has that really woody, raw and somewhat cold sound (in lack of a better word). I didnt get that kind of feel and fullness of sound on Helix and Neural DSP Plini plug in which i used also in comparison. They all sound really good, but something about the organic feel of AF sets it apart from the Helix and Plini. OFC Axe is a great unit, no doubt about it, but it is simply way expensive for my taste.

This is why I own both Axe-Fx 2 and AA12. Both tones in a mix would be indistinguishable. The Axe gives me ridiculous amounts of options for guitar and studio, and the AA12 is super easy to grab and go jam somewhere.

Absolutely Scott... Im happy with my Kemper and AA3, but lately i play my AA3 more, simply because i have some inspiring tones i made that work for me. I just wanted to show that, although Axe is obviously superior, you can make almost identical sound in a fraction of the price with Atomic. Cheers

Sounds good. I like the midrange levels you have for that borderline growl. In the end, since both units sound good in their own right, I'd consider it a victory to obtain extremely good tone at a much cheaper price point.

Hey NicKK, I have watched all your Atomic Amp videos on both YouTube and here .. I know you use 3rd party IR's but can you change the IR's to 'MATCHED" and then share your presets please? It would be great. it will benefit us to observe the way you EQ. Thank you in advance.

Here it is, with matched cab... Nothing fancy there, turn on the eco and rev for some sweet solo sounds... :)

I've owned AX8, Helix, and Atomic. The Amplifire 12 was the keeper.

Hey Clint. What didn't you like about the AX8? I own a AF3, but have myself on the waiting list for the Fractal FM3(God only knows when it will get here) because I'm a little disappointed with the AF3. The Fractal factory presets sound much better than any I have whipped up on my own or downloaded from the net.
