I connected an old passive volume pedal between my AFB and a Headrush 108 and got a lot of HUM. I figured it was the old pedal, so I got a new one, and this one hums too.

What's the issue here? Why can't I use a volume pedal?

I'm not sure that your supposed to connect a volume pedal between the AFB and your FRFR. However I can see any reason why it should introduce a hum that isn't there without it. What's your new volume pedal and what cables are you using from the AFB to the pedal and the pedal to the FRFR?

You have a grounding issue. Since the pedal is passive it won’t have its own ground and should be getting it from the Headrush input. On a 1/4” plug, the tip is signal and the sleeve is ground. Check your cables and make sure you have good connectivity from sleeve to sleeve. Make sure the HR is grounded (I assume it is 3 prong!) and there is no ground lift switch engaged.
