Just got a used Amplifire, got it connected to my relatively ancient computer, downloaded the editor. I want to restore it to factory defaults. Got an abu file in my downloads now, but can't open it. I tried an online tool but my antivirus freaked out. Is there some way to reset manually on the box?

To introduce myself, I'm an old fart who wants to record better guitar sounds than I can get with my existing collection of obsolete stuff.

    No worries.
With your unit connected to the computer via USB,
    launch the editor application.
    Go to the BACKUP tab.
Select RESTORE and select the ABU file.
The process will take about 5 minutes.
    When you're done with that,
    go to FILE-UPDATE FIRMWARE.
This process will also take about 5 minutes.
I suggest that you read the info in these two links:

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I got far enough to get an error: "could not complete restore." FWIW, Dell PC, Windows 7.

Restart both the computer and the AmpliFIRE.
Try a different USB cable and USB port on your computer
    and try again.

Thanks, Jace, I tried it again a couple times and it worked. Another question (more to come, I'm sure): are there some basic instructions for using the editor that I now have on my computer?
    Thanks again!

There's not really a specific manual for the editor.
For the most part it's just a graphic representation of the hardware
and all of the functionality IS in the standard manual.
Here's a few links that have documents explaining foot switching
and some tips for dialing in tone:
